The French artist Theodore Gericault painted "Evening" in 1818. This painting is oil on canvas. This is one painting of four that represent each time of day; this one representing the evening. He intended to finish all four works but was only able to finish three; morning, noon, and this piece. A prevalent theme in Romanticism is that nature has more power than humans. This piece shows plenty of nature such as a flowing river, mountains, plants, and dark clouds in the sky that look ready to start bearing lightning at any given moment. Romantic art commonly portrays natural disasters such as earthquakes, shipwrecks, floods, blizzards etc. Gericault painted this at a time of personal turmoil. This mood carried out into his work. Many romantic works portray the moods of the artist. In romantic art is was common that artists got their ideas for their works from current events. This piece shows the Italian countryside as he viewed it in the evening. It is interesting to note that the people in this painting aren't the point of focus. It is easy to look right past them and look to where the light is coming from. This may show the belief of a greater power. The architecture in this painting is beautiful and most likely not made up. This painting really embodies the spirit of romantic art and the romantic era.
I find the piece of art that you picked out very interesting. The landscape is absolutely beautiful, with the bridge, the mountains, the buildings, and the people. I really like the use of color and the close attention to detail in this painting. I totally agree with your point about the people not being the main focus in the picture.
