“The Brothers Grimm” recorded and published German folklore during the 18th/19th
century. They published “Children’s and Household Tales” in which famous stories
such as Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rumplestiltskin, and
Snow White. This quote is from the original “Rumplestiltskin” and it shows that
the Disney movies and kids stories are a cleaned up version. During this time
Folklore was considered a form of “pure” literature and fit in with the ideas
of romanticism, such as emotion and that it is a part of the culture.
I love the Brother's Grimm and they truly characterize the supernatural element of the romantic movement with their wonderful fairy tales.
ReplyDeleteNice job! I like how you pointed out how the Disney versions are not what the real versions of the stories were like, as the real ones were much darker. I also like how you pointed out how Folklore fit in with Romantic ideas like emotion.
ReplyDeleteI must agree that stories written by the Brothers Grim definitely would need censoring before being made into Disney movies or children's stories. On the other hand, its pretty amazing that Disney managed to salvage a sweet children's story suitable for a rated G movie.
